It's all Geek to me!

My magnus opus first appeared on HerCanberra on the great day The Avengers premiered. Even though the movie has been out for months I just had to share it here too!

It’s all Geek to me
In a few days an event takes place that geeks the world over have waited for with baited breath. We’ve had hints and teasers for the past four years, all building to this, the literal tour de force uniting an elite team of superheros, The Avengers!

The true at heart have been rewarded for their patience of staying to the very, very end of the credits of Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and Captain America, with clues about the next instalment dangled in front of us, the crumbs we’ve needed to sustain us through the long, long months to the next film. Some of those films might not have been the best stories, but it’s been like stamp collecting, you have to see one before you can go to the next.

If it seems I’m speaking a foreign language, I’ve put together a guide to bring you up to speed. So come and take your first lesson in Classical Geek 101…

Dear you...

Dear Heather

You’ve been on my mind a lot recently. I look at my beautiful nieces, nephews and godchildren and think how lucky I am to have them in my life. Some of them are about your age, 20, and sometimes when I look at them they remind of you so much. They're smart, funny, and just starting on their life's journey. Looking at them, I want to hug you close to me and tell you it’s all going to be okay.

Let’s hear it for the (nice) boy!

There are bookshops' worth of overblown romantic fiction all dedicated to the tenet that we ladies love a bad boy.

And yes, there is a lot of truth to that particular cliché, but tonight I’d like to dedicate this post to the best fictional boyfriends/husbands I’ve come across in many years of pop culture worship. These are the ones that any sane woman would choose over the brooding and furrowed browed romantic hero, who’s so busy pondering how tortured his love is that he wouldn’t notice you struggling with bags of groceries or make you a cup of tea when you’ve had a hard day at work.

So for a little while let’s forget those complicated, drama magnets and celebrate the nice guys. Yes nice. It’s not a bad thing to be. And it’s not a bad thing to be with someone who is nice, you might even be surprised at how passionate they can be.

So here goes.

Totally legenDAIRY!

A seal on the baggage carousel greeted me when I landed in Hobart today.

I was a bit taken aback, I’m here for three weeks on Antarctic related business and seals and penguins are to be expected, but not sailing around and around with the suitcases.

Fortunately I worked out it was a plaster model BEFORE I tried to offer it some fish titbits, so pretending that I see sleek bodied seals every day, I nonchalantly grabbed my suitcase and headed out to see what else Hobart has to offer.
